Overview: Many of Crane’s envelope lining papers were produced by the gravure printing process-a printing process that uses an engraved copper plate. These lining papers are an important component of Crane’s Stationery Division product offering.
Challenge: The gravure process became difficult to produce affordably due to the complexity of the process and the large minimum runs required.
Solution: Excelsior completed trials using their new Man Roland press and special coatings to reproduce a similar product at a more affordable cost. They worked with Crane to re-engineer the printing process, which reduced costs and the need for high inventory levels.
Results: Many of the previously gravured liners are now being printed on our offset press at a much lower cost to the customer.
